It is time to welcome in the new. The spring season is often associated with cleaning the household…but it is possible to do a little spiritual spring cleaning as well. There are many different ways to let go of what no longer serves you! Are you are looking for a fresh start? A clean slate? Then make the most of your home this season. Keep reading to find out how.

Why Spring Cleaning – and Spiritual Spring Cleaning – Is So Important

The tradition of spring cleaning dates back to the early 1800s. Back then, it was done to remove soot caused by heat sources used during the winter. Over time, it has become a way to recharge and refresh your space after a cold and gloomy season has ended. Some believe the urge to clean has something to do with the increased energy levels associated with sunny skies and spring weather. Whatever the reason, there are many benefits associated with spring cleaning. For instance, removing dust and dirt can keep you healthier, a clean and organized space has been connected with reduced stress levels, and less clutter means a safer environment.

Even though spring cleaning usually makes you think about mops, buckets, and sudsy water, spiritual spring cleaning is a little bit different. This process is about removing what no longer serves you or speaks to you. It is also about incorporating more of what you need and being intentional about the items in your home. Ready to get started? Let’s do a spiritual spring clean!

Don’t Be Afraid to Declutter

There are many ways to declutter your home. Going through your closet and donating rarely worn clothes is one example. When it comes to spiritual spring cleaning? It is important to take a look at all of the spiritual items that you have in your home. There are many different kinds! For example, crystals, religious texts, self-help books, guided meditation CDs (or even apps on your phone), essential oils, home décor pieces, and so on. This is the perfect opportunity to look through everything you have and make some decisions.

Certain items may need to be thrown away, like essential oils. (You can find out when to spring clean your scents here.) Look at anything with expiry dates and decide what needs to go and if there is anything that you want to repurchase. As for other spiritual items? Consider whether these items have been used recently, if you still feel drawn to them, or if you feel a desire to pass them along to someone specific. You may still love that heart-shaped piece of rose quartz. However, your intuition may be nudging you to gift that heart-shaped crystal to a friend in need. Trust your instincts when looking through spiritual items. You will know what should stay and what you are ready to share with someone else.

Create a Plan to Use What You Keep

After you have done a little decluttering (it may be a little or a lot, it all depends on where you are in your spiritual journey and what feels right to you) it is time to be intentional about the spiritual items in your home. Spiritual spring cleaning isn’t just about dusting off your favourite piece of amethyst or donating items that you aren’t using. It is about making sure you intentionally incorporate different spiritual items into your day-to-day life.

Did you choose to keep some self-help books that you always meant to read? Set aside some time to do just that. Are there a dozen half-burnt candles sitting around? Use them up! Adding a little intentionality to your spiritual practice can make a notable difference. If you are someone that uses a daily planner, write reminders in there or schedule one morning a week to read, meditate, or do some gridding work. Not a planner person? Leave your spiritual tools in a place where you will be reminded to reach for them regularly. Placement is key.

Be Mindful About What You Want to Add

Spiritual spring cleaning doesn’t just mean taking things away. It is also possible to add during this time. Think about what your home may be lacking. What do you want to see? Is there anything that would bring you peace? What would make your home feel safer and more positive? Take a few minutes to brainstorm – and be open to anything that may pop into your head. Need a few suggestions to get things started? Here are a few options to consider:

  • Write a mantra or positive affirmation on a white board at the start of each week.
  • Find refrigerator magnets with inspiring phrases for an extra dose of positivity.
  • Start keeping a dream journal so you can remember (and analyze) your dreams.
  • Make or purchase a room spray that aligns with your intentions for the space.
  • Do a book swap with a friend and learn more about different spiritual practices.

Cleanse Your Home and Start Fresh

Last but not least? It is time to get your cleanse on. Once you have decided what to remove, what to use more often, and what to add…you will be ready to cleanse any unwanted negative energies that may be lingering in your home. There are many different ways to cleanse your space, including using crystals, burning sage or palo santo, diffusing essential oils, humming or playing soothing music, adding in plants, or setting an intention for each and every room.

Spring may be the ideal time to wash the windows and catch up on your to-do list items, but it is also a wonderful opportunity to do a little spiritual spring cleaning. Use things, pass them on, or reprioritize. Be intentional about how you incorporate spirituality into your home this season.
